"Lowlife
Street"
Originally
from the musically rich Gulf Coast of Texas, PHIL GAMMAGE
now lives and works in New York City. Growing up in Texas, he
was inspired to play and write music by such local rock and roll
musicians as the 13th Floor Elevators, ZZ Top, and bluesman such
as Jimmy Reed and Lightnin' Hopkins.
Moving to New
York City in 1980, he co-founded the rock band CERTAIN GENERAL
with Parker Dulany. Playing lead guitar with that band until
1985, he co-wrote and performed on the records Holiday of Love,
Faraway in America and the critically acclaimed November's Heat.
This popular and best selling record was declared 1985 rock album
of the year by the French press. In 1990 November's Heat was
released in Europe on CD for the first time and 1999 saw the
first American CD release. GAMMAGE toured Europe with
CERTAIN GENERAL in 1984 and 1985.
Focusing on
the rock trio THE CORVAIRS in the mid to late eighties,
he wrote, produced, and performed on the records Temple Fire,
Rio Blanco, and Hitchhiker.
In the early
1990's GAMMAGE released a trilogy of critically solo records:
"Night Train", "Kneel to the Rising Sun",
and "Cry of the City". These records showcased PHIL's
songwriting, guitar playing and vocals talents and found him
exploring in depth blues and acoustic musical styles. Highlights
from these three records will be featured in the upcoming Last
Call CD compilation Motel Songs 1990-1993.
As the nineties
have progressed PHIL GAMMAGE has continued to grow as
both an artist and musician. On the 1998 VOODOO MARTINI
release Exotic and Mysterious, the Sounds of Voodoo Martini Phil
explored Latin and lounge rhythms as both a composer and vocalist/guitarist.
He has also worked with New York City jazz musicians in a new
project called
THE
SCARLET DUKES.
1999 has seen
a newly reunited CERTAIN GENERAL record and release in
the U.S. a new album "Signals From the Source" featuring
GAMMAGE's distinctive lead guitar work. The year 2000 will bring
the release of PHIL's highly anticipated fourth solo effort "Lowlife
Street" on France's Last Call Records. This record
takes up musically where his previous three solo records left
off...original songs written by GAMMAGE and performed
in his unique and dynamic style.
