GIOVANNI WURZBURGER

Author, songwriter, guitarist and singer, Giovanni Wurzburger gives a new
youthfulness to traditional Napolitan song, as he explores Mediterranean
music and rythms.

Though not evident fom his name, Giovanni is Napolitan. Born in Naples in
1955, he is a direct descendant of an Austrian Diplomat and a local water
vendor.

During the 1970's, he put together his first band : "Piazza Dante", wich was
active on the Naple's protest scene.

In the 1980's, Giovanni decided to leave his hometown to embark upon new
musical adventures. He spent two years in London, where he performed in pubs
on Portobello road and became acquainted with the London underground music
scene. Giovanni returned to Italy for a few years, before departing again,
in 1987, for Cadix, Spain. There he met and played with numerous musicians
before returning once again to his native land to launch a new group. The
Quartet Wurzburger, wich played in many festivals of the peninsula.

On june 21, 1996, Giovanni had his first gig in Paris, during the Fête de la
Musique. The audience at the Divan du Monde (in Pigalle) welcomed so warmly
that he decided to return to the same venue in May 1997 as part of a
Paris-Naples musical exchange. On this occasion he performed before a full
house with special guest Arthur H. A few days after the show, Arthur H
played in Naples, where he was introduced by Giovanni, who joined him on
stage for a few tunes.

Today, Giovanni lives in Naples where he divides his time between music and
his second passion, his bistro situated in the "Spanish quarter" (Corpo di
Napoli) of the Old Town.

Giovanni's first album, â notte, has been produced by the Naples-based
label, Polosud. No fewer than 35 musicians participated in the recording of
the melody-rich CD. On stage, Giovanni is accompanied by american
percussionist : karl Porter and 4 musicians who came from diverse musical
backgrounds including jazz (bass/drums), classical (violin) and traditionnal
Napolitan music (accordion).
