GREETINGS ! And welcome to COUNTRY DICK. Today you begin a long-overdue and breathtakingly rapturous journey to the center of myself. Along the way,
you will no doubt become aware - Disturbingly aware of the magnitude
of a great injustice perpetrated upon one of our great national
pleasures !! Enclosed is "THE COUNTRY DICK MONTANA STORY, vol I - THE DEVIL LIED TO ME !" A sweeping, high-octane concept saga chronicling one man's pursuit of decency, discovery of the gutter, and triumphant withdrawal as he stumbles onto "the meaning of it all". Hell, even
my Landlord likes it.
* Here is a brilliant debut album from COUNTRY DICK MONTANA... and a moving farewell as well... As you may know, COUNTRY DICK MONTANA was the drummer and vocalist for the BEAT FARMERS until his death last november in Canada. "COUNTRY DICK was a force of nature, one you never messed with", confesses his old mate MOJO NIXON. "He didn't listen to reason; he only paid attention to having fun...". COUNTRY DICK MONTANA was born Daniel Mc Lain in 1955 in Carmel, California. In the late 1970's, he started the CRAWDADDYS, a rock-garage band that made two albums. In 1983 - after a short time with another band, the PENETRATORS - he formed (with Buddy Blue and Jerry Raney) the cow-punk BEAT FARMERS. The BEAT FARMERS mixed punk-rock drive with rowdy rockabilly and country music. With his deep and unique voice, COUNTRY DICK MONTANA was at the center of the band's show. The BEAT FARMERS made their first album in 1985 : "Tales of the New West". COUNTRY DICK MONTANA was a very wild man on stage. Some delighted witnesses still report that during one of his last performance, he poured a pitcher of beer onto the dance floor and dove into the puddle. "He would lay on his back and drink a beer like a bear using only his feet", says a remembering Mojo Nixon. COUNTRY DICK MONTANA was also a member of the PLEASURE BARONS, a Las Vegas-style revue that consisted of compadres Dave Alvin, John Doe, Rosie Flores... and the always faithfull Mojo Nixon. The BEAT FARMERS released "Manifold", it's seventh album in 1995. Before the band went on tour to promote this CD, COUNTRY DICK recorded his "DEVIL LIED TO ME"... a wonderful, solo and savage manifesto of MONTANA's peculiar conception of pleasures... On november 8, 1995, this giant collapsed onstage, in front of a sold-out crowd while performing at the Longhorn Saloon in Whistler, British Columbia. "He died on-stage, doing what he loved !", said the band's road manager, Tom Ames. So long, DICK... |
