miguel
m - a new day
Miguel M is a young french
bluesman with spanish origins.Rather than copying his masters,
Buddt Guy and Albert Collins, he has developped a very personal
style, powerful and modern. His unique voice, his tasteful guitar
playing and his incredible stage presence have made him one of
the major figures of the french blues scene. This debutalbum
is surprisingly mature and powerful. No doubt, Miguel M is here
to stay.

CALVIN RUSSELL - live at the kremlin
This is the very first concert Calvin did in France in 1990
After the incredible success of his first album in France on New Rose, the next step was obviously to tour.
For the first time, after being ignored in his own country,Calvin played at the New Rose festival in 1990, in front
of an exstatic audience. He could not believe all those people came for him and already knew the songs.
It was a very special night; you really could feel that a star was born.

soledad bravo - Cantos Sefardies
Though Soledad was raised as a Christian, she found out that some of her ancesters came from the sefarad community, and she decided to pay a tribute to their ric hand beautiful musical culture.
« CANTOS SEFARDIES » was acclaimed by the world press, and received the prestigious award « Prix de l’académie Charle Cros » in France. Alan Vega / Alex Chilton/ Ben Vaughn - Cubist Blues
THE 1Oth ANNIVERSARY EDITION
Cubist blues is considered as one of the best recordings Alan Vega ever did. The combination of 3
great talents, Alan, Alex Chitlon and Ben Vaughn, who deicided to spend 2 nights in a recording
studio and just follow their instincts, their inspiration, and combine the experience they acquired
during their impressive careers gives a surprising and amazing result.
After its critically acclaimed release, there was a huge demand for concerts. Unfortuantely, it was
impossible to have those 3 busy guys available the same day, except fro the Transmusicales festival
in Rennes, Brittany, in decmeber 1996. It was an incredible night. Thanks God, it was recorded, but

Robert gordon & chris spedding - rockin' the paradiso
After 13 years of silence , the 2 rock ,'roll giants decided to re unite. The special chemistry that had always marked their association was fully intact, and night after night they wowed audiences with their unique brand of rock ‘n’ roll. The concert at the Paradiso in Amsterdam was the final night of the tour and, inspired by a wild audience, they delivered a classic performance. The band, which also featured John Willoughby on upright bass and Todd Glass on drums, was a tight unit, and offerings like ‘It Feels So Right’ and ‘Turn Me Loose’ were just stunning. The September 10th, 2005 Amsterdam concert at the Paradiso was one of those rare moments when you realize that you are witnessing something magical, something that can never be repeated. It was a triumph of musical greatness. I was there when they turned the power back on -- and believe me, there was no shortage of electricity on that stage!

murphy - murphy gets muddy
I have
been fortunate enough to see so many Blues Masters including
BB, Muddy, James Cotton and Albert King (who I opened for on
a French tour) in concert and I was always aware of the debt
my generation of rock musicians owed to them. So the idea
of doing a “Blues Album” was planted in my brain
probably 25 years ago or longer. It was the music I listened
to on the road in my hotel rooms and late at night in my office.
But at that time I didn’t think I was old enough to sing
the blues with any authority so I waited until the time was right.

the slickee boys - live at last / fashionably late
The Slickee Boys were a 5-piece psychedelic rock band that formed in Washington, D.C. in 1976. Not quite punk but not quite pop either, they carved out an innovative niche somewhere in between. Singing about lost love, meeting girls or just heading to the beach for kicks, these were songs that got you moving but also featured melodic hooks that would stick in your heads for days afterwards.
This great double CD features their fabulous live album, recorded
during their 1988 french tour, and their last sutdio album.

In 1980, after a long silence
since the end of Big Star, Alex came backwith "Like flies",
produced in Memphis by Jim Dickinson. It is a totally unpredictable,
chaotic, fascinating and surreal album, which probably describes
accurately what Alex had been going through for a while. Like
Flies On Sherbert has taken on the status of a cult masterpiece.
Feudalist Tarts, recorded four years later takes Alex back to

CHARLIE FEATHERS
Honky Tonk Man / New Jungle Fever
Charlie Feathers was
a genius. He was the meanest rockabilly singer in the world.
hat's why Quentin Tarentino, who included Charlie's songs on
the Kill Bill 1 and 2 soundtracks, and Lux Interior
from The Cramps, consider him as a master.
Here is what Lux wrote on Charlie:I could talk about Charlie
Feathers 'til I'm blue in the face, but there is no way to explain
his greatness. He is completely unique. You have to hear him
to get the picture.
In the 50's, he was one of the people who invented rock'n'roll. In
the 80's, he's still inventing and defining it.
He seems to have only gotten stranger and more perverse through
the years. He baby-talks, chirps, hiccups, moans and gasps his
way through a song, 'til it becomes a little separate world on
its own.
His version of "Roll over Beethoven" is so full of
menacing weirdness, it sounds like a song you never heard before.
Charlie is a crazy magician and he knows all the tricks. But
don't take my word for it. Buy this record ! Lux Interior

JEAN -PHILIPPE RYKIEL
Under the Tree
Born blind in 1961, Jean-Philippe Rykiel taught himself
piano from a very early age. If he recognizes the influence of
Theolonius Monk as preponderant in his decision to become a musician,
it was on discovering Pierre Henry that he became impassioned
by the creative perspectives offered by synthesizers. His technical
mastery of the instrument and his musical intuition rapidly brought
him recognition by his contemporaries, which provided him many
experiences and collaborations as programmer (from Vangelis to
Vladimir Cosma), instrumentalist (Steve Hillage, Jon Hassell,
Didier Malherbe and numerous African projects) or arranger (Xalam,
Salif Keita, Leonard Cohen, Youssou N'Dour). In 1992 he co-composed
and co-produced "Eyes Open" for Youssou N'Dour and
their collaboration continued for the worldwide hit album "Wommat/The
Guide" in 1994 .
The same year, he records "Hope for enlightment", with
Lama Gyurme, a magiacal combination of sacred tibetan chanting,
and contemporary music, a worldwide success.
2003 : "Under The Tree " - Jean-Philippe
Rykiel 's second solo album in twenty years consists of ten
pieces, all composed and played by the man himself.,whichare
meditative, transportive and spiced with exotic flavours. Rykiel
offers elegance, vitality, joy and beauty which, in his case,
is spelled m-u-s-i-c. And no lyrics are needed because Rykiel
's music says it all. A perfect collection of songs to charm
a heart, enlight a spirit and warm a soul. Impressionistic and
sunny soundscapes that exudes calming and flowing cohesion.

PLAY NEW ROSE FOR ME
A compilation featuring Alex Chilton, The Dead Kennedys, Chris
Bailey, The Slickee Boys, Sky Saxon Willie Alexander,Mudboy and
the Neutrons....
What is the best way to
celebrate the 100th release of one of the most oustanding record
label of its generation ?
Simply by asking some of its artists to cover songs by other
artists signed on the label. That's indeed how Patrick Mathé
asked its artists to cover songs done by other New Rose artists.
Among the label's few various artists releases, Play New Rose
For Me shows how coherent and how close the artists signed
on the label were, with the feeling of being part of a large
family based in Paris but spreading as far as New Zealand, Australia,
Sweden the UK and the US.

ALEX CHILTON
High Priest / Black List
After the chaotic but legendary
Like Flies On Sherbert in 1979, it'll take a few years for a
proper Alex Chilton album to be released, despite the releases
of Feudalist Tarts and No Sex, two eps which had satisfied die-hard
fans and hip college kids alike in the meantime. This 8 year
gap can be explained by the fact that it was a time when Alex
left his hometown bound for New Orleans. With the sturdy backing
of drummer Doug Garrison and bass player René Corman,
Alex sounds really happy with his guitar. He alternates original
numbers as well as cover versions, be they jazz, country or rhythm'n'blues,
with a great deal of class. Who else than Alex Chilton can indeed
sing Porter Wagoner's Rubber Room, the jazz classic Margie, a
song he learnt thru Fats Domino version or Charlie Rich's Lonely
Weekends, two of the most well-known numbers here ?

ALEX CHILTON'S
LOST DECADE
Here is the second release on our New Rose Classics series.
In Memphis, like
everywhere else, the 1970's have left their toll of lost dreams
and endless disillusions. A 'Lost Decade' according to
the title of this album, now available for the first time on
a digital format. Originally released in 1986, this double album
evidences the outstanding route of one of Memphis' prodigal son,
during a decade in which he would go from universal teenage acclaim
with the Box Tops to the fucked up New York hipness of the late
Seventies. Being an introduction to a body of work whose legend
then outreached its reality, 'Lost Decade' is a fascinating
insight of a unique artist and producer's career.
Recorded right after he left the Box Tops at 1457 National, Ardent
Studio's second location, « Free Again », «
Come On Honey », « I Can Dig It » and «
Just To See You » should have been released on Alex's first
solo album. This record should have come out on Atlantic or Brother,
The Beach Boys' own record label. Eventually, this album never
saw the light of day on vinyl. These four tracks are now part
of « 1970 », the famed 'lost album' published in
1996, a transition record between the Box Tops' blue-eyed soul/pop
and Big Star's transcendent rock'n'roll. A former Lawson &
Four More band member as well as a solo artist and a producer
of certain Box Tops sessions, Terry Manning helps out Alex on
those tracks, playing the piano and bass. Richard Rosebrough,
another Ardent regular, once drummer with the garage band Four
Jokers and later part of Memphis 'supergroup' Alamo, also plays
on those sessions from 1969 and 1970, as well as an uncredited
Chris Bell, Alex's future alter ego in Big Star. « Free
Again » already demonstrates a remoteness from the music
industry world. It's almost a freedom chant from Alex, already
fed up with the great music circus, after he understood the whole
thing when he reached the heights of the charts at age sixteen
with the irresistible smash-hit « The Letter ». read more>> |

PAUL ROLAND
Gaslight Tales - The Anthology (1980-1997) / 2 CD set
After several years of absence, Paul Roland has finally decided
to come back to music. We are proud of releasing this wonderful
anthology of one of the most talented British artists. Paul has
put a lot of time and work in it , re-recording and remixing
most of the songs. The result is sparkling.
« This eccentric son of Kent is one of the most unashamedly
literate singer-songwriters that you'll ever be likely to hear
and this collection is rather like a version of the Victorian
Strand magazine, delivering short vignettes of crime, adventure
and courtly romance. » RETFORD TIMES
« With tracks with
titles like Knights, Nosferatu and Sprong Heeled Jack, you get
the feeling this is the type of album Mary Shelley would have
made if she were around in the 1970s. » SWINDON EVENING
ADVERTISER
« Gothic rock as cartoon.
» ALTERNATIVE PRESS
PAUL ROLAND has been variously
described as the last English eccentric, a Twentieth Century
troubadour and a Romantic in the tradition of Poe, Lovecraft
and M.R. James. His songs teem with characters, both grotesque
and humorous, juxtaposed and set in music suitably atmospheric
and evocative. Paul's preoccupation with fantasy and historical
themes, often set in Victorian or Edwardian England has been
described as « Gothic in the traditional sense ».
This compilation explores those interests. Spanning the years
1980 to 1990 it encompasses some of his delightful songs and
almost stories. read more>>>

VENCEREMOS
- Homenaje a Salvador Allende - Tribute to Salvador Allende
11 SEPTIEMBRE 1973 - 11 SEPTIEMBRE 2003
Initially based on HISTORY
- the tragical 1973 military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet
in Santiago, Chile - that record is a superb compilation of south-american
music, a real "coup de maître" by ANGEL PARRA,
pivotal figure in the Chilean musical scene. Since his very first
recordings, ANGEL has always fought for human rights and justice.
On this project, his combination of transcendence and truth continues
to transfix.
ANGEL tells a tragical story
and states the facts. This is - for all generations - an introduction
to Chile's history, and to the memoir of Salvador Allende. Never
has the requirement of his ideals been felt more severely than
today.
A collection of moving songs
to revisit the past. VICTOR JARA's "Te Recuerdo Amanda"
and "Manifiesto" are tangible forms of beauty. ISABEL
PARRA offers in "Ay Canto que mal me sales" some moments
of pure emotion. SVENTISCKA sounds so right on the anthemic classics
""Venceremos" and "El pueblo unido".
And HAK & MOUSS - a young luminous french duo - contribute
guest vocals on the haunting "Presidente", delivering
a choking and tense message to younger listeners.
A record about freedom and
hope... A formidable tribute concieved with generosity, emotion
and passion ! Daring and essential !

a long time, and let the younger generations discover great rock
bands from the eighties. The In mates is undoubtedly one of the
best british rock/rythm and blues
bands ever. Robert Plant, who knows what he is saying, once declared
that Bill Hurley was the best rock singer. This double album
proves it and also what an incredible band the In mates are.
These were the band's best two albums since 1979's « First
Offence », their debut lp. Sax player John 'Irish' Earle
already present on « First Offence » is one of the
key element of those two complimentary albums.
Released in 1991, « Inside Out », The Inmates' eighth
album, displays a change of sound, as evidenced by the arrival
of steel-guitar player Richard Lightman at the production helm.
He had been recommended to the band by The Godfathers after The
Inmates's great producer Vic Maile passed away.

The Windy City Strugglers
Snow on the Desert Road
If you don't live in New Zealand or never had a chance to visit
this far away island, you have never heard of the Windy City
Strugglers.
Though, they have been together for 32 years, and are considered
as a musical treasure in their country. They started as a Jug
band, and covered all the blues and R&B classics from the
deep south. Their music has that authentic Mississipi twang,
but they also play anything from country blues to calypso. With
their new album, "Snow the Desert Road", they decided
it was time to write and sing their own songs, and it is a miracle.
You might think that a veteran band like this would come out
with some nice rootsy songs, sounding the ones you loved from
the fifties or sixties. Not at all ; their songwriting , playing
and singing is so intense, refreshing and powerful that they
prove it is still possible to innovate and surprise with a music
which was supposed to have nothing new to say anymore.
Dan Penn, the ledgendary Memphis songriter, who wrote hits for
Aretha Franklin,The Box Tops, Otis Redding and Percy Sledge toured
New Zealand a few years ago, and attended a Windy City Strugglers
gig. He was so impressed that he declared Rick Bryant is the
best white blues singer he has ever heard.
We are proud to release such a formidable album, one of the most
unexpected surprise we had for years, coming from a 30 years
old band, which has never played outside of their island at the
other end of the world. Those guys have soul and it pours from
every note they play.

DAN BRODIE AND THE BROKEN ARROWS
Empty Arms Broken Hearts
His debut album "Big Black Guitar", and the following
EP,"You make me wanna kill" took many by surprise;
At last a new charismatic young rock singer! The young australian
rockerc omes back with a fantastic new album, produced by Ozz
Fritz (Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson) and John Wooler,
the boss of Point Balnk Records, who worked, among others with
Ry Cooder, John Hammond and John Lee Hooker
"I wanted to make
a rock'n'roll record," says Brodie, whose rich musical
background draws as much from Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan as Nirvana
and The Gun Club. "To me, rock'n'roll is not really a
volume thing. It's more the attitude of it, the passion involved"
"I felt like Bob Johnson may have felt when he was working
with Dylan in the '60s," Wooler says. "Here's
a young guy with styles stemming from country and blues, but
mixed up with his own sound and lyrics that mean something today.
I love Dan's songs: lyrics that make me smile as well as making
me think. He has a great sense of melody and I like the instrumentation
he uses. He takes Americana and makes it more edgy. Gospel, country,
rock, he makes them all sound great sitting next to each other."
What more needs to be said? Now, listen to "empty Arms Broken
Hearts and discover that a rock star is born.

Saylor White
Graven Image
You probably have not heard of Saylor White. Though, if you are
a Calvin Russell fan,you know about his unforgetable song , "Crossroads",
which Calvin covered on his second album, "Songs from the
fourth world", and which turned into his biggest hit.
In 1993, New Rose released Saylor's first album, "That's
just the way it goes", which was critically acclaimed, but
was not a great commercial success.
Ten years later, unexpectedly, Saylor sent us his new songs.
How could we resist releasing an album containing such jewels?
Saylor proves, with "The Graven Image", that he is
a major songwriter, and a wonderful singer. The more you listen
to this album, the more his poetry and his irresistible melodies
grow on you.
Lots young guys call themselves "songwriters" and sing
about a life they have not lived; Saylor had a life, not an easy
one, and he has stories to tell, real ones.

Soledad Bravo & Dioni Velasquez
Homenaje a Alfredo Zitarossa
The magical voice of SOLEDAD BRAVO gives life to the melodies
and verses of Uruguayan poet ALFREDO ZITARROSA. Here she interprets
12 typical 'milonga', 'vidalita' and 'zamba' which give some
idea of her scope, and of her breathtaking technical mastery
which her successors have vainly tried to match : vocal intensity
mixed with an explosion of feeling so intense. Nobody has captured
that longing yearnful emotion in the poet's words like SOLEDAD
BRAVO in this recording. It touches a sad chord that is expressed
so heavenly with one of the most extraordinary voice of our times.
The Argentinian DIONI VELÁZQUEZ - known for the elegance
and musical intelligence of his performances - shows one more
time what an excellent accompanist he is. Listen carefully to
his guitars and arrangements : every note here is played in the
service of ZITARROSA's poetic architecture.

Solitaire
In
december 2001, Spencer was touring Germany.Like it happens all
the time on tours, a couple of dates were cancelled. Rather than
sitting in his hotel room, Spencer, thanks to Rienhard Finke
of Valve Records, decided to do something he had wanted to do
for a long time; recording solo the favourite songs of his endless
repertoire . He went deep inside his roots , back to Skip James
and to some of his old songs.Just him and his guitars. Once again,
he shows what a master of the blues he is.

With his rugged facial features, statuesque physique and clasicaly

successfully singing in New York cabarets, where he now lives,he
decided to bring to life the music of the german movie icon and
goddess of the century,Marlene Dietrich. « Dietrich Hotel
» is not an impersonation of the great Marlene, but his

Jobutsu
Project:
A group
of musicians at the crossroads of many influences...
Whoever talks of electronic music today talks often in terms
of label or genre. We run equally across house, techno, goa trance
(??), trip hop or hardcore in the creative galaxy that gravitates
around the concept of electronic music. It's tough nonetheless
to put a label on the members of the Jobutsu Project. They are
musicians, not DJ's or remixers. They are all quite simply the
product of a cultural and musical mix. Into this fertile terrain,
between East and West, they have drawn their creative and productive
resources. And proud of their Asian roots, they have been able
to compose by drawing respectively from their already rich individual
careers.
Behind the
Jobutsu Project facade hide some of the great names on the new
Japanese electronic music scene.

Chris
Spedding
One Step ahead of the blues
Guitarist
Chris Spedding was a mainstay of the British session scene in
London during the 70s, playing with just about everyone from
early fusion band Nucleus, Jack Bruce, Elton John, John Cale,
Roy Harper, Dusty Springfield, Harry Nilsson & Bryan Ferry
to The Bay City Rollers (anonymously!) the Wombles and the Sex
Pistols. Spedding produced the demos which got the Sex Pistols
their first record deal. In 1975 Spedding had a hit record in
Europe called " Motorbikin ". In addition to his myriad
sessions he has made about a dozen solo albums as a singer/songwriter/guitarist.
Spedding's current CD One Step Ahead of the Blues is a return
to his r'n'b roots. He is continuing his association with Bryan
Ferry and will tour with him this summer.
